Comment on GAS WAR! What will really work? by Professor Light Green

If the premise of the GAS WAR is simply to bring down the price of gasoline, I fail to see any green dimension to the action. In fact I would say that the low price of gasoline is a hindrance to innovation in conservation in alternative energy sectors. In many Western European countries where petrol prices are higher, green energy initiatives are progressing quite rapidly (wind power in the UK and France, solar power in Portugal and Germany), because they are economically competitive, even in early stages of development, when petroleum is more expensive.

Notwithstanding the record profits that oil companies are realizing in the last years, the price of petrol probably should increase in the United States to reflect the real costs of using these fuels (the so-called carbon tax). However, rather that to create greater corporate wealth, the increased price should be applied to R&D for more efficient technologies, pollution prevention and remediation, and any number of well known but under-financed solutions to our energy problems.

Awesome work Matt! People are often surprised at how receptive colleagues are to environmentally beneficial ideas. Just speaking up and taking a little initiative is often enough to bring about a change.

Once your garden begins to grow, you may find that you do not produce enough compost from your own yard. Consider going on “yard-waste patrol” during the active landscaping seasons. Many people bag their yard waste to go to the local landfill. You can take home leaves and grass clippings left on the curb around town (especially easy if you have an SUV or pickup truck) top supplement your own organic waste to create large amounts of compost. If you are really motivated and have the space, you might have enough compost to share with friends! Maybe they will catch the compost bug as well. Here is a good resource on composting… http://www.howtocompost.org/

If you are drinking water from plastic bottles for purity, you may want to consider investing in a reverse osmosis water filtering system, or using a five gallon water dispenser with the reusable and returnable containers. In this way you will not have to fret over getting recycling out to the curb. Remember that the "three Rs" are listed in a hierarchical order environmental benefit… reduce, reuse, recycle. Reducing consumption saves the most energy and resources, while recycling saves some.

Great post. I agree that Live Earth will make people think twice about waste and that is a great thing. My criticism's of Live Earth have more to do about the reality of what needs to be done today to really make a difference if it needs fixing.

Less pollution is a great thing. Using resources is wonderful. Getting a reasonable amount of mile per gallon (km per liter) is almost a requirement but the bigger challenge is does all that matter for global warming. Yes, it matters for preserving resources and less landfills but does it make a real impact on global warming and saving lives by reducing global warming. The jury is still out on that question and it is the question that I try to dig into on my site Is It Getting Warmer - www.globalwarming-factorfiction.com.

I commented on the Live Earth Pledge on my site that covers global warming, Is It Getting Warmer? (www.globalwarming-factorfiction.com). You can read my full comments there but, in short, I think it is slightly foolish to make a pledge that is nearly impossible to carry out. 90% reduction of carbon footprint on a national scale is almost ludicrous and would cause extreme hardship on any nation, probably causing millions of lives globally.
